Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has charged the new board of the National Health Insurance Authority to turn around the fortunes of the scheme which is currently struggling to pay service providers.
Dr Bawumia was speaking during a ceremony to swear in the board members at the Presidency.

He expressed confidence that the NHIS under the leadership of the new board would device strategies to make the scheme more efficient and sustainable.

The National Health Insurance , a social intervention program established under the Kuffuor administration faced serious financial crisis during the NDC administration, a situation which lingers on.

Many service providers, including the Christian Health Association of Ghana, CHAG, have lamented the failure of the scheme to pay claims for over a year. This has forced the service providers to resort to cash and carry for NHIS cards bearers.

Chairman of the new board, Prof Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, assured Dr Bawumia that the council would not disappoint the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The inauguration of the board paves way for parliament to adopt a  proposed formula for disbursement of funds under the scheme laid before the House on June 20.
