The March 2022 deadline for the SIM card re-registration would most likely be extended following long queues at registration centres.

There have been widespread complaints about frustrating long queues that make the registration process cumbersome.

But speaking to Asaase Radio, head of Consumer and Corporate Affairs at the NCA, Nana Dufie Badu, said there will be an opportunity for everyone to register their SIM cards.

“I would like to reassure subscribers and the general public that there’ll be the opportunity for everybody to register their SIM. The NCA and the ministry of communications have been continuously monitoring the exercise and it is the hope of the ministry and the NCA that every SIM user will be able to register their SIM.

“In this regard, if there’s a need for an extension, the Communications Ministry and the NCA will sit down and take the first step,” she stated.

All four Mobile Network Operators (MNOs): MTN, AirtelTigo, Glo and Vodafone have been working to reduce and eliminate the long queues at registration centres.

A joint communique issued by the telecommunication companies and the NCA, said, “all MNOs will work to improve the customer experience at various registration centres to reduce and eliminate long queues at stage 2 of registration.”

“The MNOs will take urgent steps to increase the number of agents/staff undertaking the biometric capture at stage 2 of the exercise, open up additional registration points and increase the number of devices for the biometric capture.”
