The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has announced that 380 commercial drivers have been arrested for charging passengers fares that were not approved by the authorities.
According to the Minister, the arrests were made as part of an operation that began in November 2025 to enforce approved transport fares ahead of the Christmas season.
Dr Amoakohene also revealed that the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council is in discussions with the Ministry of Transport to secure additional buses to support increased travel during the festive period.
In a Facebook post, the Minister said that the crackdown is aimed at protecting commuters from being exploited during the busy Christmas travel season.
Meanwhile, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has also deployed a special task force to clamp down on drivers charging unapproved fares within the city.
The Public Relations Officer of KMA, Henrietta Afia Konadu, said the task force is acting on the directive of the Kumasi Mayor and will carry out spot checks to ensure compliance with the approved fare schedule.
She warned that any driver found charging illegal fares will be dealt with according to the law.
Both regional and city authorities said the measures are meant to protect passengers and maintain order during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. They also urged the public to report any cases of fare overcharging to the appropriate authorities.
