The New Tafo-Akim District Police Command is investigating a fatal motor accident that claimed the life of a school nurse in the Eastern Region in the early hours of Friday, May 8, 2026.

According to a press release issued by the Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, police received a report at about 1:30 am about a solo accident near the Lakeside washing bay at OPASS Junction.

Officers who responded to the scene found a male rider lying near his Royal motorbike with registration number M-23-UE 424, sustaining severe injuries.

The victim was rushed to the New Tafo-Akim Government Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.

He has been identified as Edward Cann, 36, a school nurse at Ofori Panin Senior High School (OPASS).

Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr Cann was travelling from Kukurantumi towards OPASS Junction when the incident occurred. It is alleged that he failed to disengage the motorbike’s kickstand, which struck the road surface while in motion, causing him to lose control and fall.

The body has been deposited at the New Tafo-Akim Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy. The motorbike has also been impounded at the New Tafo Police Station to assist investigations.

The Police Service has extended condolences to the family of the deceased and the OPASS community.
