Some Commercial drivers in Accra have accused President Akufo-Addo of breaking his campaign promise to reduce fuel prices in the country, following recent hikes in the prices of petroleum products.

According to them, fuel prices and the standard of living in the country continues to increase by the day, contrary to the promise made by the president in the 2016 election campaign.

The drivers expressed their grievances during a demonstration led by COPEC and the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union, Wednesday, 7th February 2018, and gave government a one-week ultimatum to work towards reducing fuel prices.

Drivers plead with gov't to reduce fuel prices

Chairman of the Ghana Committed Drivers Association, Charles Danso bemoaned that the increase in fuel prices is affecting their businesses negatively and causing them to incur several losses.
He further urged government to listen to the grievances of drivers since they already pay several other taxes to the Transport ministry and are already burdened financially.

"We're pleading with President Nana Akufo-Addo to reduce the prices for drivers. We voted him into power based on his promise to reduce the prices so he should fulfil his promise. The fuel prices are too high, besides we also resource government with taxes paid to the Transport sector. If after a week we don't see any change, government will hear from us again" he said.

Another protester, who claimed to be a member of the NPP expressed his disappointment saying that he capitalized on Akufo-Addo's campaign promise to convince most of the drivers to vote for the NPP, however, the recent hikes in the fuel prices have made him a laughing stock among his colleagues who chastise him for campaigning for the NPP. According to him, if the government cannot reduce the prices, they should at least maintain the old prices so that it does not become a burden to commercial drivers.

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, COPEC, the Industrial and Commercial Workers union, together with numerous commercial drivers, embarked on protests against the increase in prices of petroleum products amidst reservations from the National Petroleum Authority(NPA), claiming that the demonstration was unjustified.
