The Senior Minister Yaw Osafo-Marfo says the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has failed in the fight against corruption.

Mr Osafo-Marfo explained that the organization needs to do more to fulfil its mandate after nine years of its establishment.

EOCO was set up in 2010 to monitor and investigate economic and organized crime in the country. The Attorney General, on the other hand, is responsible for prosecuting these offences by people to recover the proceeds of financial crime.

Speaking at the launch of the strategic plan of the Ghana Anti Corruption Coalition in Accra today September 25 2019, he said the that the politicization of crime hinders the fight against corruption

''The establishment of EOCO was specifically to fight corruption. I don't think they have succeeded. This is a reminder to the institution that we are still expecting them to play a very key role in the fight against corruption. The first problem as a coalition is that Ghanaians by notion are trying to give criminality a political tag and this is wrong. A crime is a crime and now the whole country is divided NPP, NDC and people defend wrong with political colours, we cannot fight corruption that way''.

He added that crime must be approached from its angle and that if corruption is made unattractive then we are fighting corruption but if we make people hide under the umbrella of a political party to continue with corrupt practices then we have a problem as a nation.

Mr Osafo Marfo also backed calls for assets declaration of public officials.

''I should be ready to declare my assets and be ready to accept the publication of assets. As one commented, people have nothing, they enter politics and within 6 months have put up mansions, so if we were to declare our assets publically, the story will be different. So we should not only talk about the declaration of assets but must be public''.
