Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called on the Nana Addo led-government to invite former President John Mahama to assist in taking a decision on whether the GITMO 2 should stay in Ghana or be returned.

Per Okudzeto Ablakwa's view, Mr. Mahama, under whose watch the detainees were brought into Ghana needs to be consulted as the country decides the fate of the detainees, which is currently being monitored by America and the international media.

The Supreme Court on Thursday declared as unconstitutional the hosting of the two detainees in Ghana. The ruling says government should either return the detainees or turn to parliament to legalize their stay in the country.

But speaking on Kasapa FM, Mr.  Ablakwa urged government to ensure due diligence is followed in order not to make Ghana attract negative attention from cronies of the detainees.

“We should also make sure that the implementation of the orders of the Supreme Court does not affect the good relationship between Ghana and the United States of America, this is a super power you don’t want to step on their toes unnecessarily and at all times we must make sure the national interest in this matter overrides all other considerations.

He advised that a thorough consultation be made in order to avoid any diplomatic mishap between Ghana and the United States.
