Residents of Kumasi and surrounding communities are expected to face temporary water shortages next week as Ghana Water Limited (GWL) shuts down a major treatment facility for critical maintenance works.
The state-owned utility provider said the Barekese Water Treatment Plant, which supplies water to the Kumasi Metropolitan Area and adjoining districts, will be taken offline from 6am on June 9 until 6am on June 11.
According to GWL, engineers will undertake repairs on a key transmission pipeline as part of efforts to improve the reliability and sustainability of water supply services in the Ashanti Region.
The company said the maintenance works were necessary to safeguard the integrity of the pipeline and ensure its continued operation.
Residents, businesses and institutions have been advised to store adequate quantities of water ahead of the planned shutdown to reduce the impact of the temporary interruption.

GWL apologised for the inconvenience and assured consumers that water production and distribution would resume immediately after the repairs are completed.
The utility provider also appealed for public cooperation and urged customers to follow its official communication channels for updates throughout the maintenance exercise.
Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city, depends heavily on the Barekese Water Treatment Plant for potable water supply, making disruptions at the facility significant for households, businesses and public institutions across the metropolis.
