Government has added 32 new Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to the existing 216, thereby increasing the number of MMDAs to a total of 254.
The move is in an effort to ensure a more effective administration system and draw the citizenship closer to the government.
The Minister of Local government, Hajia Alima Mahama, presented the Legislative Instrument which backs the creation of the new districts to parliament on Thursday.
She explained that some districts had been upgraded to the municipal status depending on the level of development in the area, however, the process did not lead to the creation of new constituencies since that can only be authorized by the electoral commission.
“We have some districts that the president has elevated into municipalities and those are not new but just elevation.
Within the Metropolitan Assemblies, some have grown big, so for instance, Ayawaso East has been divided into a municipality, same as Kwadaso and Oforikrom. We have not created any district that will necessitate the creation of constituencies. So, we have some constituencies which have been turned into districts.â€, the minister explained.
Hajia Alima Mahama highlighted that the 38 new districts have been created from scratch considering the capitals and assured Ghanaians that if there is the need for any amendments, it will be duly addressed.
