Families who lost loved ones in the El Wak Stadium stampede are to receive GHC150,000 each as part of a relief package announced by Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi.

He met the six affected families on December 1, offering condolences and outlining how support would be delivered.

Each family will receive GHC50,000 to cover funeral costs and an additional GHC100,000 as compensation. Mr Genfi told the families that senior officials from the government will continue to stand with them during this difficult period.

He also noted that siblings of the deceased will be given priority in the ongoing recruitment process for the Ghana Armed Forces so that the families do not feel abandoned in their moment of loss.

He explained that the Ministry of Defence is working closely with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to provide further help, including emotional care and welfare programmes.

According to Mr Genfi, President John Dramani Mahama has personally shared his sympathy with the families and assured them of the state’s commitment to support them.

The tragedy occurred on November 12 during the 2025 and 2026 Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise at the El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

A sudden wave of applicants breached security and rushed toward the gate before the scheduled screening. The confusion that followed led to the deaths of six young people and left many others injured.

Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin of the Ghana Armed Forces said medical teams are still working to stabilise the injured at the 37 Military Hospital.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and wish a quick recovery to everyone receiving treatment,” she said.
