The Ministry of Education is considering lifting the ban on the use of mobile phones in Senior High Schools [SHS] in the country.

That's according to Deputy Minister of Education Yaw Osei Adu Twum who has hinted that the Ministry is considering lifting the ban to help bridge the gap in ICT education in Ghana.

Access to ICT education and the needed resources for the study of ICT has been a problem in Ghana, most schools lack the facilities for the smooth learning of ICT making it very difficult for graduates from especially schools in the remote part of the country, to compete equally with others in the urban centers.

In past years government through the Ministry of Education has placed a ban on the use of mobile phones in secondary and basic schools with the explanation that it is a distraction to their studies.

But Mr Adu Twum said the Ministry of Education is considering lifting the ban for students to bring mobile phones to school as a way to increase their knowledge base in ICT education.

"Some schools don't have computers but the students have mobile phones at home so why wouldn't we allow them to bring the phones to the school to help ICT learning." He said.

He added there are a lot of contents on the internet which students can be taken through to aid their understanding of the 21st-century world driven by technology.

Mr Adu Twum concluded the lifting of the ban will even enable students to do their home works and other academic activities on their phones for an effective teaching-learning process.
