Travel and tour agency, Simba Holidays, has partnered with the Greater Accra Regional Directorate of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) for the World Tourism Day 2025 celebration.
This year’s World Tourism Day celebration was under the theme: “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”.
The partnership, according to Simba Holidays, is to demonstrate their recognition of tourism as a powerful force for sustainable transformation and in promoting cultural diversity.
The celebration in Accra began with a tree planting exercise followed by a tour of the Accra Zoo.
Speaking to the media, CEO for Simba Holidays, Samson Afordofe stated that the partnership with GTA is their agency’s commitment to contribute to sustainable tourism.
“We are excited about this opportunity, and we decided to partner because number 1, we believe in forging good relations with our regulators, and secondly, tourism must be sustained.
We think that this is one of the ways we can enforce the very commitment that we are always talking about. Everybody says they are promoting sustainability and protecting the environment, but this is one of the practical ways any agency can demonstrate that pledge and that commitment,” he explained.
Mr Afordofe noted that “Today’s celebrations go beyond just tree planting, it’s to foster and re-enforce our principles of making travel an everyday activity and strengthen our alliance with the Ghana Tourism Authority.”
On her part, Mrs Roberta Dawson Amoah, Greater Accra Regional Director, Ghana Tourism Authority, highlighted how tourism can be harnessed as a tool for sustainable transformation, with a special emphasis on protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
She stressed that the GTA, as the main implementing agency of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, is mandated not only to regulate the industry but also to advise policymakers and promote sustainable practices.
“When you visit any eco-tourism site or community, you must ensure that you leave minimal footprints. While enjoying the natural environment, we must preserve it for the future,” Mrs Roberta Dawson Amoah emphasized.
Today, as we celebrate the day with this theme, we are determined to walk the talk and so today we are not using water in plastic bottles, and we have also donated a trash can to the Accra Zoo to tell them that Ghana Tourism Authority, we care about the environment."
Mrs Roberta Dawson Amoah reiterated her call on Ghanaians to act as responsible stewards of the environment, noting that sustainable tourism can only thrive if natural resources are preserved for generations to come.
Present at the celebration were stakeholders from the tourism industry and students, making the celebration one that drives the sustainable tourism agenda.
