Seven persons have been confirmed dead and their bodies retrieved from a collapsed mining pit at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
However, the number of those rescued alive is projected at four or five, who are at the Mpasatia Hospital receiving treatment.
According to our Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Nicholas Osei-Wusu, the search has almost ended with no indication of any more victims trapped in the rubble.
The victims were among about 30 residents of the Kasotie community who allegedly defied advice by the Assembly Member of the Kyekyewere Electoral Area, Samuel Ayine, against entering the abandoned mine site since, according to him, it had become a death trap.
However, the people rather saw it as an opportunity to search for gold ore and therefore rushed there at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
The mine then collapsed, with many of the people escaping and leaving 12 of them underneath the rubble.
The Deputy District NADMO Director, Augustine Gakpetor, also confirmed that seven of them have been retrieved dead, with five survivors receiving treatment at the Mpasatia Hospital.
The search party, however, remains at the scene for any surprises and has also made an announcement on a local community information centre for residents to volunteer information about any of their missing relatives to help in the rescue efforts.
