The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has declared an indefinite strike over what it describes as unfair recognition on the university’s governing council.
The union’s decision follows the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) move to nominate a representative from its rival union, the Teachers and Educational Workers Union under the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), to serve on the council.
TEWU-GH, which insists it has the majority membership on campus, says the nomination undermines democratic union representation and amounts to deliberate suppression.
In response, the union has resolved to withdraw its services with immediate effect, disrupting various administrative and non-academic activities at KNUST.
TEWU-GH says the strike will continue until the decision is reversed and proper recognition is given to the union in accordance with its numerical strength and established rights.
The union’s leadership has vowed to intensify the action if their concerns are not addressed swiftly by GTEC and the university administration.
