Authorities at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital say the disease which caused the death of four students at the Kumasi Academy could be the first of its kind in the country.

Autopsy reports on two students who died last week and preliminary finding by the Noguchi Memorial Institute have dismissed Meningitis as the cause of death.

Speaking in an interview with a Kumasi based radio station, senior pathologist at KATH, Dr Osei Sampene said the signs exhibited by the deceased students are one of a kind and unknown in his field of practice. He added the Ghana could possibly be the first country where the causal agent has been discovered.

Dr Sempene warned it could even be a virus, considering the signs such as the accumulation of blood under the eyes of the victims, saying the disease may be highly contagious.

Meanwhile, up to 25 students are still on admission at the KNUST hospital battling the infection

The Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service have been administering vaccines and antibiotics to students in a bid to prevent and control further infections.

A visit to the school premises shows some parents are still agitated by the continous stay of their wards because they have no confidence in how the authorities of KUMACA have handled the outbreak since the first students died in March this year.
