Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has suggested that prresidents should retire on salary rather than paying them colossal monies as ex-gratia after they exit office.

“The head of state should retire solely on his salary as such he has to be able to afford buying a house with the salary gained. If you can’t then you have a lot of issues to solve" he stressed.

Speaking on Kasapa FM, the old hand journalist specified that, “even Prime ministers in the United Kingdom return to their private mansions after their tenure of office, as such head of states in Ghana should focus on their salary than paying mind to state properties”.

Kwesi Pratt’s comments is as a reaction to former president Mahama’s decision to keep his Bungalow No.3, Prestige Link, Cantonments in Accra which he currently resides and its adjoining facilities as his official home and Bungalow No.6, 3rd Avenue, Ridge, Accra as his office.

However, Mr Mahama’s decision to keep the property has been heavily criticised as unlawful.

Meanwhile, according to reports that came early this week, Mr. Mahama in letter told President Nana Akufo-Addo, he withdraws his initial interest in keeping his official residence as part of his retirement package saying he was ready to move out and wait for the state to provide him with an alternative residence whenever in its own time.
