The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mohammed Adjei Sowah has dismissed two officials of the AMA Task Force for failing to execute their duties.

“For not enforcing the law, you’re fired today,” the Mayor told the two during an inspection and decongestion exercise on Monday, 8 January.

The two failed to ensure that vehicles were prevented from offloading goods at the Central Business District of Accra after 6am.

The mayor indicated that the directive “is the new rule, and it will continue,” adding: “We have not said you should not offload your goods, we are saying you should do it between 6pm and 6am.”

The AMA is embarking on a decongestion exercise in some parts of Accra and Mr Sowah has said the planned decongestion exercise will be sustained until the city is kept clean.

Speaking on the exercise in a radio interview Monday, Mr Sowah said: “The hawkers should be law-abiding because it is the Metropolitan Security Committee's decision endorsed by the regional security committee.

“We have police officers and military personnel as members of the task force for this exercise and I'm not too sure that it is in anybody’s interest to go and fight the police; that will not be accepted. And, so, we are just encouraging the traders to be law-abiding to ensure a peaceful city.

He added: “The exercise costs a lot of money to the city authority. However, with the kind of support from stakeholders like the media, we'll continue to talk to the traders and everybody to ensure the exercise is sustained.”
