The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the North East Region has issued an urgent evacuation alert to residents living along the banks of the White Volta River and other vulnerable waterways ahead of the planned spillage of the Bagré Dam in Burkina Faso.
According to NADMO, authorities of SONABEL in Burkina Faso have informed the organisation that water from the dam will be released on Friday, August 28, 2026.
In a statement NADMO said an earlier plan to spill the dam had been suspended after the water level dropped.
However, the organisation said the water level has since risen unexpectedly, prompting the Burkinabè authorities to proceed with the release of water.
NADMO is therefore urging residents and communities along riverbanks and other areas likely to be affected to evacuate with immediate effect and remain vigilant.
The organisation cautioned residents to pay close attention to subsequent updates from NADMO and other relevant authorities as the situation develops.
The alert is particularly significant for communities downstream of the Bagré Dam, where an increase in water levels following the spillage could pose risks to lives, property and livelihoods.
NADMO said the evacuation directive forms part of efforts to protect lives and property through early warning and preparedness.
