Nana Ama Bonsu I has been officially unveiled as the new Asantehemaa, ushering in a new era of traditional leadership in the Asante Kingdom.

The ceremony took place on Monday, July 6, 2026, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, attended by traditional leaders, dignitaries and members of the Asante Kingdom.

She succeeds Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III, who served as the Asantehemaa until her passing in August 2025.

The unveiling ceremony was performed in accordance with Asante customs and traditions, formally introducing Nana Ama Bonsu I as the Queenmother of the Asante Kingdom.

The office of the Asantehemaa is one of the most influential institutions within the Asante traditional system, with responsibilities that include advising the Asantehene on matters of governance, succession and the welfare of the kingdom.

Asante queenmothers also play a key role in preserving the kingdom’s customs and traditions, promoting social cohesion, resolving disputes and safeguarding the interests of women and children.

Nana Ama Bonsu I is expected to continue the legacy of her predecessor by serving as a custodian of the kingdom’s cultural heritage while supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening peace, unity and community development across Asanteman.

Her installation fills one of the most significant traditional leadership positions in the Asante Kingdom and is expected to reinforce the kingdom’s governance structures.
