Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have successfully rescued a newborn baby who was dumped in a pit latrine in Obuasi, Ashanti Region.
The dramatic rescue took place on Sunday, July 20, 2025, after residents in the area heard faint cries coming from the latrine and immediately alerted authorities.
A team from the Fire Service arrived at the scene and carried out a delicate operation to retrieve the infant from the pit.
“It was a highly sensitive rescue. Thankfully, the baby was brought out alive and is now receiving medical care,” a GNFS official said.
The baby was rushed to the Obuasi Government Hospital, where health officials confirmed the child is in stable condition.
Local police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend the person(s) responsible for the act. Social welfare authorities have also been notified to ensure the child's safety and welfare moving forward.
This incident has sparked outrage and concern among residents, many of whom are calling for stronger support systems for young mothers and stricter punishment for child abandonment.
