The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Yussif Mohammed, for unlawful possession of over 200 rounds of ammunition and other potentially dangerous items.

The suspect was apprehended near the Asankare Police Barrier while carrying a backpack believed to contain the ammunition. His arrest was made possible through the collaboration of police officers on duty and some informants.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Deputy Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Cephas Arthur, explained that the suspect was traveling on a passenger bus bound for Accra from Kumasi when the incident occurred.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the backpack, which later fell off the bus, drew the attention of nearby officers. Upon examining the bag and questioning its owner, the suspect admitted it was his,” ACP Arthur disclosed.

A detailed search of the backpack revealed a cache of weapons-related materials including two empty CZ magazines, one empty G3 magazine, two G3 magazines each loaded with eight rounds, and various other rounds—35 rounds of CZ ammunition, 42 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, 16 redheaded G3 rounds, and one BB round.

Police also discovered a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, a bulletproof vest, two black jackets, a green jacket, a crash helmet, and two military uniforms.

The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue to determine the source of the ammunition and his intent.
