Police in the Ashanti Region say investigations have opened into the alleged shooting into a crowd of protestors by military personnel.

Calling for calm in a statement issued on Tuesday, June 29, police suggest that their preliminary investigation into the incident does not point to a breach of the protocol for crowd control.

“Preliminary investigation shows that following the burial of Ibrahim Mohammed ‘Kaaka’ at Mempeasem cemetery at Ejura today 29th June 2021, some irate youth blocked the main Ejura Atebubu road impeding traffic.

“The Police moved in with military reinforcement to quell the situation, but the irate youth charged on the security officers with all manner of implements including firearms, clubs, machetes, and stones. The security officials fired shots to disperse the angry mob who failed to retreat but rather massed up at all corners. The death and injuries were recorded in the process,” the statement said.

Reports say calm is returning to the Ashanti Region town.

Two people are reported dead after the military fired into the crowd of protestors.

Four other protestors have sustained severe gunshot wounds and have been sent to the Ejura Government Hospital, trailed by a huge crowd of supporters.

Hundreds of angry youth have been demonstrating on Tuesday against the gruesome assault and subsequent death of Ibrahim Kaaka Mohammed, an activist affiliated with the #FixTheCountry movement and Economic Fighters League.

Call for justice

The hashtags #JusticeforKaaka and #WeareallKaaka have been trending on social media platforms since Monday, June 28, 2021, to demand justice for 40-year-old social media activist.

He was attacked by two unknown assailants at Ejura on Saturday, June 26, 2021, over his activism.

An amateur video that has popped up on social media show Kaaka being struck in the head repeatedly with heavy objects until he lost consciousness.

Before he was assaulted there have been numerous threats on his life and there are rife allegations that local government officials in Ejura are behind the threats and subsequent assault on Kaaka.

Many of the youth in the town have blamed police for failing to provide protection for him even though he reported the threats made on his life.

Although two persons have been picked up by the police over the death of Kaaka, social media is awash with posters and comments calling for the perpetrators of the attack on the activist to be found.
