Ghana Health Service has started the distribution of polio vaccines to various health facilities in the Greater Accra Region.
According to the Ghana Health Service, some of the vaccines have been dispatched to the Eastern and Volta regions for distributions at health outfits in those areas.
This would go a long way to save the lives of newborn babies who were at risk of contracting polio, one of the six killer diseases, following the shortage of the vaccine in the country about two weeks ago.
The shortage was caused by government’s high indebtedness to UNICEF, the international body that procures the critical vaccines.
Speaking to Citi News, National Programs Manager for Immunization at the Ghana Health Service, Dr George Bonsu said measures have been put in place for a comprehensive program to restock all facilities nationwide to address the recent shortages and prevent future occurrence.Â
He added that the vaccine van left on Thursday for the Eastern and Volta regions. Some would be dispatched to the Central and Western regions on Friday.
"The next stop would be the Ashanti region, Brong Ahafo and the Northern region and we would ensure that all facilities get enough vaccines," he stated.
He added that, by the middle of next week, the vaccines would reach all regional capitals and hopefully all districts.
