Shortage of hotel and residential accommodations has hit the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua, due to the impending National Delegates Conference of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), scheduled to take place next weekend.
Investigations conducted by Prime News Ghana indicate that all hotels in the Koforidua and nearby towns got booked few days after the announcement by the NPP to have its 2018 National Delegates Conference in the Regional capital.
The NPP on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, announced that, it will hold its National Delegates Congress in Koforidua in the Eastern Region from June, 15 to 17 2018, but rescheduled it from July 6 to 8, since the earlier date coincided with this year’s Eid ul-Fitr celebrations which fell on June 15, 2018.
Prime News Ghana gathered that, moment after the announcement, there was mass rush for hotel accommodation by contestants, party executives, Members of Parliament and party supporters.
Those who went late and could not secure hotel accommodation resorted to residential accommodations, which is even scarce at the moment.
Prime News Ghana toured the Koforidua Township on Wednesday, June 27, to secure either hotel or residential accommodation but all the hotels were full.
Hotels such as Bed Time, Eastern Premier, Translinks, Clab Gardens, Alexander, Kwabeksco, among others were full at the time of Prime News Ghana’s visit.
Almost all the hotel attendance told Prime News Ghana that their rooms got booked moment the announcement of the date and venue for the conference in May.
Accommodation has become a challenge for the NPP which nearly compelled the party to change the venue from Koforidua to Accra.
Credible information available to Prime News Ghana indicates that the NPP was considering changing the venue of its National Delegates Conference from Koforidua to Accra because of accommodation.
Prime News Ghana’s source indicates that the reason for the change in venue was as result of the inability of the party to secure enough accommodation for the numerous delegates and supporters who would be trooping the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua.
The source said the party hierarchy, moments after the decision to hold the Conference in Koforidua, has been working tirelessly to look for both hotel and residential accommodation for delegates and supporters, but has not been able to secure enough for them.
The party was therefore considering moving the conference to the national capital, Accra, which is also the capital for Greater Accra Region.
At the time of publishing this story on Friday, June 22, 2018, some party executives, led by the incumbent National Youth Organizer, Sammy Awuku, were in Koforidua to press on their quest to secure both hotel and residential accommodation for the teaming delegates.
