The December election, which is a few weeks away, is starting to shift the balance of power in the country.

Today, Primenewsghana.com, brings you a list of the most powerful Ghanaians at the moment because there is a possibility that the December elections will radically alter the balance of power in the country. 

1. John Mahama

The president remains the most powerful person in the country, with his control over state resources. The constitution gives him broad powers that put key institutions like the security services and NADMO, to name a few, under his control.

2. Nana Akufo-Addo

The 72-year-old is currently the second most powerful man after the president as he boasts the support of half of the country and has the potential to win the December 7 election. He also boasts the support of powerful donors and special interests

3. Charlotte Osei

The chairman of the Electoral Commission or the electoral commissioner has become so powerful with the elections coming up. She has the power to influence the security of the country with decisions she takes . Some may even argue that she is currently the most powerful personality in the country.

4. Georgina Wood 

The chief justice is one of the most powerful Ghanaians both within the context of the elections and outside of it. She is already asserting this power by setting up courts that will sit on election disputes. Should one of the main presidential candidates choose to reject the result of the election and petition the Supreme Court, she will be required to empanel judges to sit on the case.

 5. Lordina Mahama

The first lady is one of the most powerful people in the country. She has the ear of the president, and is believed to have control over some lucrative government contracts.

 6. Edward Doe Adjaho

The Speaker of Parliament boasts significant power even as the current house nears the end of its term. 

7. Ibrahim Mahama

The president's brother is one of the most influential people in Ghana now. He is said to have won several lucrative government contracts worth millions of dollars. He also has the attention of the president. Just last week, the Ghana Army investigated him for using soldiers as bodyguards.

8. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The popularity of the NPP vice-presidential candidate and former Bank of Ghana deputy governor has been skyrocketing in recent times. He has eclipsed Alan Kyerematen to become the third most powerful and influential man in the NPP after Akufo-Addo and former President J.A. Kufuor. He also appeals to many people across the political spectrum. Most importantly, there is the potential that he can become vice-president in December.
