Traffic on the busy Accra-Kumasi Highway came to a complete halt on Monday after a three-vehicle crash blocked the Birimso Bridge section of the N6 Highway, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the collision occurred on Monday, August 3, 2026, and involved a passenger bus, a loaded articulated truck and a saloon car.
The crash completely obstructed both lanes of the highway, preventing vehicles travelling between Accra and Kumasi from passing through the affected stretch.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the police said personnel from the Eastern South Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in Kibi were immediately dispatched to the scene to manage traffic and coordinate efforts to clear the road.
To minimise disruptions, the police introduced temporary diversions for motorists using the route.
Vehicles travelling towards Accra have been redirected through Kibi at Nsutam, while those heading to Kumasi are being diverted through Apedwa.
The circumstances leading to the crash and the number of casualties, if any, were not immediately known.
The Ghana Police Service has urged motorists to remain calm, cooperate with officers directing traffic and use the designated diversion routes as emergency responders work to remove the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow.
