The Winneba High Court today upheld an application to restrain the Vice Chancellor, Prof Mawutor Avokeh, and the Finance Officer of the University of Education Winneba from holding themselves in office until a case on the legality of their appointment is determined.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor is to act in place of these two officers and no other person who derives his authority from the two officers should make any payment to a contractor or agency on behalf of the University.

A former Assembly member for the area Supi Kofi Kwayera dragged the school to court over appointments and decisions made by the universities governing council, which's mandate expired in 2013. His lawyers argued all decisions taken by the council after the expiration of its tenure should be declared null and void.

The plaintiff prayed the court to declare the appointment of the two officers, and any decisions taken by them in relation to the administration of the university null and void because they were appointed by the governing council.

The judge, His Lordship George Ato Mills-Graves, upheld the application and awarded a cost of GHS4000 against the University and the Ministry.

The government  has also been ordered to within 14 days to constitute a new governing council.

The case has been adjourned to October 9, 2017.
