Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has presented relief items to traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Accra Central Market as part of government efforts to support victims and help them recover from their losses.
The donation, made during a visit to the market on Friday, June 5, included 30 cartons of cooking oil, 300 mosquito nets, two bales of used clothing, 300 blankets, and 100 mattresses.
The Vice President toured the affected sections of the market to assess the extent of the damage caused by the fire and interacted with traders whose businesses were impacted by the incident.
She also called for an immediate structural assessment of the affected building to determine its safety and inform the next steps in the recovery process.
As part of the relief intervention, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang directed officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) managing the relief efforts to prioritize locally manufactured products when procuring items for victims.
Some of the affected traders expressed gratitude to the Vice President and the government for the support, describing the donation as timely assistance during a difficult period.
“We appreciate your support and concern for us. This gesture will go a long way in helping us recover. May God bless and protect you,” one of the beneficiaries said.
The fire outbreak, which occurred on the night of Wednesday, June 3, destroyed several stalls and goods belonging to traders.
Reports indicate that a firefighter sustained injuries while helping to contain the blaze.
