Donald Trump surprisingly defeated Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton in the November 8 US Elections and would be sworn in as the 45th US President.

The win has been hailed as good omen by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) who share ideological similarities with the Republican Party and even has an elephant, just like the Republicans, as their emblem.

Apart from the ideological and emblem similarities, there is also the trend of NDC being in power when the Democrats are in power and losing when they lose.

But looking beyond these obvious similarities, these are some of the things the two have in common.

1. Septuagenarians (Age mates)

Donald Trump is 70 years and will become the first septuagenarian to assume a first in office as the President of United States when he is sworn in on January 20, 2017.

At, 72, Akufo-Addo, will also be the first septuagenarian to assume the Ghanaian presidency if he wins on December 7 and is sworn in on January 7.

2. Social media campaigns

Shunned by almost all of America’s traditional media, Donald Trump had to rely a lot on social media to get his campaign messages across. With Hillary Clinton having a lot of funding for advertisements, Trump could neither compete on TV, radio nor in print and had to rely on Facebook live to broadcast his speeches at rallies for some attention.

Akufo-Addo may have not been shunned by the media as in Trump’s case because he still have some friendly media around.

But the fact that this is his third attempt and that his party has been in opposition for the past eight years, would obviously mean scarcity of funds and it is showing in the NPP’s inability to compete with ruling NDC when it comes to advertisements. Whether it’s radio, TV and print especially billboards, the NDC’s presence is much felt.

In fact, NDC adverts have been appearing in the Daily Guide, a newspaper owned by the acting National Chairman of the NPP but the situation is different when it comes to social media.

Despite the positioning of President Mahama as a younger tech-savvy person, Akufo-Addo has more Facebook page likes than him and his website always up to date unlike that of the president with articles as old as 6 months.

3. Long and successful professional careers

Trump has had a long career in real estate dating back to which has yielded relative success.

Called to the English Bar in 1971 and the Ghana Bar in 1975, Akufo-Addo has also had a long and successful career as a lawyer.

This means that while Trump has been a real estate businessman for 45 years, Akufo-Addo too has been a lawyer for 45 years.

4. Similar marriage journeys, same number of children

Trump is married to Melania and Akufo-Addo is married to Rebecca and there’s no doubt about the beauty of the two women.

But it is worth noting that the two gentlemen have had three wives each.

Trump married  Ivana Zelníčková,  Marla Maples and now,  Melania Knauss and has a total of five, Akufo-Addo also said to have married Remi, a Nigerian, Eleanor Nkansah-Gyamenah and Rebecca Griffiths-Randolph and also has a total of five children.

We live to see whether these similarities would make Akufo-Addo win or not.
