Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament to remove Abena Osei-Asare as Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, citing concerns over her impartiality and potential conflict of interest.

In a letter dated November 3, Obeng, Kwame Asare Obeng popularly known as “A Plus,” argued that Osei Asare’s previous role as Deputy Minister of Finance under Ken Ofori-Atta’s tenure, marked by alleged fiscal indiscipline and controversial contracts, undermines her credibility to lead the committee.

The contracts in question, including the Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML) contract and the ECG-Beijing Jao Loss Reduction agreement, are currently under investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Mr Obeng also referenced Osei Asare’s defense of Ghana Revenue Authority Commissioner-General Rev. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, who refused to disclose his age, as evidence of her questionable commitment to transparency and accountability.

The petition highlights concerns that Osei Asare’s continued leadership of the Public Accounts Committee could compromise parliamentary oversight and erode public trust.

Abena Osei Asare, MP for Atiwa East, served as Deputy Finance Minister from 2017 to 2025 and is a member of the New Patriotic Party.

“The Public Accounts Committee remains one of Parliament’s most critical instruments for ensuring transparency, accountability, and the responsible use of public funds,” A Plus stated.

“It is deeply concerning that Hon. Abena Osei Asare, former Deputy Minister of Finance, now serves as the Chairperson of this important committee.”
