The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced eight (8) men for their involvement in violent disturbances during the Ablekuma North by-election on July 11.
They include Mohammed Abubakari, 32, a private security officer; Tijani Mahamudu, 38, a driver; Prince Dzakpasu, 39, a businessman; Anas Mohammed, 42, an estate developer; Mohammed Hamda, 35, a mechanic; Darko Otibu Samuel, 33, a businessman; Musah Muntari, 46, a station manager; and Ali Saeed, also known as Bomba, 43, a businessman.
The court ordered each to pay a fine of 500 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢6,000, or face 24 months in prison.
Narrating the facts of the case, Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer said on June 11, 2025, the complainants, who are members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) went to the Ablekuma North re-run of the parliamentary elections.
He said in the course of visiting the polling centres, on reaching the Methodist Church Polling Station, Hawa Koomson and Sanaa were attacked and assaulted by the accused persons.
After they were rescued by the security men at the polling station, the accused persons proceeded to assault Kwei, who was also at the polling centre without any provocation.
The prosecutor said all the complainants were rescued and taken to Odorkor Police Station and the Regional/CID/AR, where they formally lodged complaints of assault.
“Police Medical Forms were issued to them after which they proceeded to the hospital treatment. The accused persons were subsequently arrested. They all denied the allegations in their caution statements.
“After investigations, they were charged with the offences and arranged before this honourable court,” the prosecutor told the court.
