President Nana Addo Dankwa-Akufo-Addo has imposed a ban of the purchase of state vehicles by government officials.
Government policy used to be that government officials could buy state vehicles which were over two years old.
Speaking to journalists at the Peduase Lodge in the Eastern Region, Akufo-Addo said the policy had been abused and should therefore end.
“These are difficult times for the Ghanaian people. The policy that has worked so far which is running into a lot of problems because of the way it has been abused, which is that officials can buy official cars, that policy will no longer work. No official is going to have the opportunity to buy his official car. So we put an end to it,†he said.
The president also said that the ban he had put in place against the purchase of new vehicles by the government was still in effect because of what he said was the economic challenges facing the country.
The Akufo-Addo government at the beginning of the year announced that 200 state vehicles were missing.
It subsequently formed a committee led by the chief of staff, Frema Osei, to track and retrieve the vehicles, which were believed to have been in the possession of former government employees of the erstwhile John Mahama administration.
It is not immediately clear if the phenomenon of the missing cars informed Akufo-Addo's decision to ban the sale of government vehicles.
