Popular National Democratic Congress activist, Appiah Stadium, who was arrested in Kumasi for allegedly insulting  President Nana Akufo-Addo, has been transferred to Accra.

The activist was arrested for claiming in a radio interview the president smokes marijuana or weed, an allegation which has consistently been used against him by opponents for several years in this country.

Regional Police Public  Relations Officer, ASP Juliana Obeng told Accra based radio station the activist’s arrest followed orders from the National Headquarters in Accra.

“We got instruction from the national headquarters to help them with the arrest of Appiah Stadium and that is exactly what we have done. As I speak to you, Appiah Stadium is on his way to the national CID headquarters. When we arrested him, immediately we put him in a car off to Accra.”

But the arrest has been condemned by a section of the public, who described the decision as needless and unwarranted.  Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the NPP, in a Facebook post, described the arrest as “unnecessary” and “uncool” and one which would not please the president.

“These things shouldn't happen. I can see the president being extremely unhappy about any citizen being arrested for allegedly insulting him. It goes against all that he stands for. I may not be privy to the details but I know whatever the justification the President will not like this one bit.”

In a related development, NDC Greater Accra Regional Organiser Anthony Nukpenu has accused Hopeson Ardoye, Deputy National Security Coordinator in charge of Airport, of being the one who instructed the arrest of the activist.
