Results trickling in from some polling centres in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency shows the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Lydia Alhassan has taken an early lead.

Political parties vying for the vacant seat are the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC), Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).

The candidates are Lydia Seyram Alhassan (NPP); Kwasi Delali Brempong (NDC); William Dowokpor (PPP); and Clement Boadi of the LPG.

According to JoyFM, the wife of deceased MP Kyeremanten Agyarko has taken the lead in most of the polling stations.

This is not surprising as the biggest opposition candidate, NDC’s Kwasi Brempong withdrew from the contest after a shooting incident early Thursday morning.

The provisional result from the Methodist primary B for instance showed;
Delali Brempong: 38
William Doworkpor: 0
Clement Boadi: 2
Lydia Alhassan: 152

TOTAL VOTES CAST 194
REJECTED BALLOTS 2

Results at the controversial La Bawalashie, where there was a fracas in the morning, also shows Madam Alhassan in the lead.

Security has been tight in all the centres with a lot of police and Fire Service officers present to forestall any fracas.

One thing that has characterised the by-election is low voter turn out in the areas they visited. Some polling centres on the University of Ghana campus had as low as zero per cent turn-out and a high of 28 per cent.

The elated but composed NPP candidate, who incidentally celebrates her birthday today is receiving lots of congratulatory messages at the Central Cafeteria collation centre at Legon.

She is said to have garnered 69 per cent of the total votes although the Electoral Commission is yet to make the final announcement and declare her winner.
