The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that the ECOWAS Council of Ministers has declared its full support for Ghana's petition to the African Union (AU) against xenophobia.
According to the Minister, the Council also gave its unconditional endorsement to the Accra Next Steps Commitments on Reparatory Justice, describing the development as a significant boost to Ghana's continental advocacy efforts.
Mr. Ablakwa disclosed this in Facebook post on Sunday, July 19 after participating in the ECOWAS Council of Ministers meetings in Sierra Leone ahead of July 19 convening of the Authority of Heads of State and Government.
"I commend the ECOWAS Council of Ministers for declaring full support for Ghana's petition to the African Union against Xenophobia and for their unconditional endorsement of the Accra Next Steps Commitments on Reparatory Justice," he wrote.
He reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to promoting African unity, tolerance and shared prosperity, stressing that the government would continue to pursue the vision of the country's first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
"We shall keep working tirelessly towards the attainment of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's dream of a united, tolerant and prosperous Africa," the Minister stated.
The endorsement by the ECOWAS Council is expected to strengthen Ghana's efforts to address xenophobia on the continent and advance discussions on reparatory justice at the African Union level.
