Here are five words and expressions that have gained traction among Ghanaians since President John Mahama took office.
1. Evidence-based
This expression gained popularity after President John Mahama's State of the Nation address in February in which he said he had undertaken an evidence-based transformation of the economy.Â
2. Dumsor
Dumsor has gained mileage under Mahama's administration due to the power crisis that bedevilled his four-year term. The debilitating situation compelled him to say: "I, John Dramani Mahama, will fix this power crisis."
3. Dead goat
“It is said that when you kill a goat and you frighten it with a knife, it doesn’t fear the knife because it is dead already. I have a dead goat syndrome.â€
That was Mahama's response to some members of the Ghanaian community in Botswana in 2015 when he was asked how he would deal with strikes by trade unions ahead of elections in 2016. Since then, the "dead goat" has gained popularity among Ghanaians. It usually refers to someone who does not listen to or take advice from anyone.
4. Opana
The use of "Opana" in political discourse gained currency after Mahama used it to describe the NPP acting chairman, Freddy Blay.
5. Incompetent
The word has mainly been largely promoted by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) which uses it to describe Mahama's administration. It is not uncommon to hear Mahamudu Bawumia or Nana Akufo-Addo "the incompetent Mahama administration.
