Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu and the Ranking Member of Communication committee, Alhassan Bashir Fuseni, has said the police acted lawlessly for attempting to arrest Madina MP, Francis Xavier Sosu after the Speaker's declined their request to hand him over.

He stated that the police could only take action against the MP provided that Parliament had completed findings and recommendations following the referral of the issue to the Privileges Committee by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

"The police are being lawless in this matter because the matter is before Parliament and the Privileges Committee has commenced work on the matter and not until they have come up with their findings and recommendations...that's lawlessness," he said.

According to him, articles 117 and 118 are clear on the privileges of Members of Parliament.

He urged the police to adopt the right procedure to effect an arrest.

"What laws justify their actions? When they went to the church, did they show a warrant? Is that how the police work in a democratic state in Ghana? They should give as a break. This is lawlessness. Nobody is saying MPs are above the law, there are procedures. Read articles 117 and 118. It is very clear, so you don't do that," he stressed in an interview with Ghanaweb.

The Sagnarigu MP is positive that the police will bear the consequences of their actions in Parliament.

Francis-Xavier Sosu led a demonstration last week to protest bad roads in his constituency, which the police contend came along with some unlawful acts and misconduct by the protestors.

Francis Sosu denied an invitation by the police on grounds that he could not be brought in for questioning while performing his parliamentary duties without approval from Parliament.

He stressed that though protestors had blocked roads, there was no basis for any arrest because due process was followed before and during the demonstration.

Some plainclothes police officers were present at the Madina MP's church on Sunday, however, police has denied that they were there to arrest the lawmaker.
