Ghana will host a High-Level “Next Steps” Conference on Reparatory Justice from June 17 to 19, 2026, in Accra.
The event follows a recent United Nations resolution declaring the trans-Atlantic enslavement of Africans as a grave crime against humanity. The conference is being organised under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, who also serves as the African Union Champion for Reparations.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting will bring together heads of state, ministers, experts, academics, and international organisations to discuss the next phase of the reparations agenda.

Participants will focus on turning the UN resolution into practical actions and developing a clear global framework for reparatory justice. The conference is also expected to strengthen Africa’s collective voice and promote collaboration with the African diaspora and global partners.
As part of the programme, a special Juneteenth commemoration will be held at the Christiansborg Castle in Osu, highlighting its historical connection to the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The event will serve as a moment of reflection, remembrance, and a call for justice.
The conference is expected to produce key recommendations and action plans to guide future engagements on reparations at both continental and international levels.
Ghana says it looks forward to welcoming participants from around the world for what is expected to be a major step in advancing the global reparations agenda.
