The Ministry of Health has begun a three-day mid-year review of government’s health sector commitments under the NDC’s 2024 manifesto.
The review, which opened in Ho on Saturday, August 15, 2026, has brought together heads of agencies, institutions and programmes under the Ministry, as well as Board Chairs and Chief Executive Officers of health agencies.
The meeting is being led by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and is aimed at assessing progress, identifying implementation challenges and finding ways to accelerate the delivery of key government commitments.
Among the major initiatives under review are the Free Primary Healthcare programme, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCare, the retooling of health facilities, expansion of the National Health Insurance Scheme and the introduction of specialised nursing programmes.
The Ministry will also assess progress on the construction of additional regional hospitals in the six newly created regions, the establishment of cataract centres in selected regions, formalisation of allowances for nursing trainees, recruitment of health professionals and the completion of abandoned health projects.
Heads of the various agencies and programmes are expected to present updates on their areas of responsibility, outlining achievements, challenges and measures needed to speed up implementation.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr Akandoh pointed to what he described as key achievements recorded across the health sector and commended the agencies whose work had contributed to those gains.
He also urged Board Chairs and heads of agencies to adhere strictly to the Public Financial Management Act.
The Minister stressed the need for prudent and efficient use of public funds, particularly as government works to deliver on its health sector promises.
The retreat will also include training in Public Financial Management, intended to strengthen financial management, accountability and good governance across the health sector.
