President John Dramani Mahama is set to chair a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday, May 14, to consider recommendations submitted by the constitutional review committee.

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that a draft position paper has already been prepared following a detailed review by the Attorney General and the President’s legal team.

According to him, President Mahama earlier directed that the constitutional review report be thoroughly studied to guide government’s response to the proposals.

“So Thursday, 14th May, there will be a special cabinet session chaired by the president himself to consider the draft position paper,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said on Joy News.

He explained that the outcome of the meeting will determine the government’s official position on the various constitutional reform proposals, adding that the approved document will later be made public.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu noted that unlike a commission of inquiry, the constitutional review committee requires a government position paper rather than a white paper.

He added that while the Cabinet meeting will primarily focus on the constitutional review report, other matters may also be discussed.

According to him, once Cabinet approves the document, government will proceed with the next stage of implementation, including the establishment of an implementation committee.

He said the recommendations would be assessed individually, with some likely to be accepted, modified or rejected based on feasibility and other considerations.

Government, he added, will continue engaging the public after Cabinet concludes its deliberations.
