Former President and leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has promised to revitalise and restore the fishing sector in Ghana to its former glory.
Mahama made this pledge during his interaction with the fishing community in Tema on Saturday.
Addressing the fishing community, the NDC flag bearer assured them that the next NDC administration would reestablish the nonpartisan Landing Beach Committee and ensure a fair distribution of premix fuel and outboard motors to all registered association members without political bias. He emphasised that politics would not be allowed to interfere with the fishing sector as is the case now and promised that every member would receive their rightful entitlements.
Additionally, Mahama stated that the next NDC government would reintroduce the subsidised premix and outboard motor policy that had provided relief to fishers during his previous administration. He also vowed that the next NDC government “will exempt artisanal fishers from the closed-season policy".
The NDC leader promised to complete the National Fisheries College, initiated by the late President John Atta Mills, to ensure that fishing industry members receive appropriate training and are effective and efficient in their work.
Furthermore, Mahama pledged that his administration would supply fish-finding equipment to the fisherfolk, enabling them to scientifically locate fish and simplify their job.
