What is certain is that gun shots were heard when National Democratic Congress (NDC) sympathisers and some executives embarked on a regional health walk on Sunday morning while passing by the residence of NPP presidential nominee, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist allege the NDC loyalists attempted to break into Nana Addo’s Nima residence but when the security detail prevented them, the clash ensued.

The NDC people however maintain, they held a peaceful walk till they were set upon by NPP loyalists when they got to the NPP presidential nominee’s residential precinct wielding guns and other offensive weapons.

NDC executive and attorney Godwin Tamakloe rendered his account on Facebook:

“From La Junction through Jockey to Osu through Oxford Street, then to Danquah circle through the Police headquarters to Ako Adjei Interchange. We moved through Nima Police station. The Police blocked any supporter from even getting to the front of Nana Addo house. No NDC supporter was armed.

“The warning shots were fired right from the residence of Nana Addo. In fact I personally saw the gentleman with the gun. At a point the Police had to ask him to go back to the house with the gun. He will come and show it to the supporters to come and see. We prevented anyone from getting close to the street in front of Nana Addo house. Earlier, they confronted our supporters on motorbikes but we asked them to calm down. All the shots were fired from the house. In fact, I was there before the Starr FM reporter got there,” he added.

Officers from the Nima Police Station had a torrid time preventing the situation from escalating till tempers eventually settled.

As Ghana heads to the December 7 polls to elect a president and parliamentary representatives, varied peace calls have been sounded but given the high stakes in this year’s election, political leaders and security capos must be on high alert to safeguard the peace before, during and after the elections.
