The National youth organizer of the incumbent NPP, Sammy Awuku has stated that the party would sponsor only its supporters to go watch the upcoming 2018 World Cup in Russia.

According to the youth organiser, the decision is a retaliation to what the immediate past National Democratic Congress (NDC) party did during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil

Speaking at the Greater Accra Regional Delegate Conference of the party, Sammy Awuku also charged government appointees especially MMDCEs to provide jobs to party members because it was through their efforts the party came into power.

“It is time for us as party people to take care of our party people. When the NDC took their supporters to South Africa for the world cup in 2010, we didn’t complain, when they took their supporters to Equatorial Guinea, we didn’t complain, when they took them to Brazil, we didn’t complain, as for Russia, it is our time, they shouldn’t complain.”

However, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) Emmanuel Akwetey has termed the comment from the National Youth Organizer of the NPP as unfortunate and needless.

He continued that, though their decision appears to be political equalization it is a clear breach of Chapter 6 of the constitution of Ghana. He told JoyNews.
