Parliament reconvenes with major casualties in the majority caucus

Parliament of Ghana reconvenes on Tuesday, December 20 to finish up its work before its dissolution to make way for the seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic to commence proceedings by January 2017 after been sworn-in.


The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), lost over 45 seats in the just ended parliamentary elections. President Mahama suffered a unquestionable defeat after he garnered just 44.40% of the total valid votes cast as against 53.85% of his main contender, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Per the result projected by Prime News Ghana and confirmed by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, this is the first time in the history of Ghana that a flagbearer of an opposition party has defeated an incumbent president with in such a convincing manner.

Some well-known incumbents Members of Parliament who lost in the just ended parliamentary elections include Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hanna Serwaa Tetteh; Western Regional Minister, Paul Evans Aidoo; former Majority Leader, Cletus Avoka; Deputy Minister for Education, Alex Kyeremeh; Deputy Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Baba Jamal; Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Dr Hannah Louisa Bissiw and Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Murtala Mohammed, Amadu B. Sorogho (Alhaji).

Topmost on the agenda for the December 20 sitting would be the “Right to Information Bill” which had gone through the second reading, and is probable to be passed before the sixth parliament is finally dissolved.
