Former Member of Parliament for North Dayi in the Volta region has described as a fraud the restoration of trainee nurses allowances by the New Patriotic Party [NPP] government.

George Loh said the restoration of the trainee nurses allowances should have been in the interest of the Ghanaian public but not to score a political point to the peril of national development.

President Akufo-Addo during the week launched the restoration of trainee nurses allowances in the Brong Ahafo region, with fifty-eight thousand health trainees as beneficiaries, comprising nurses and midwives. will be paid their allowances of four hundred Ghana Cedis. This means Government will spend a total of 232,000,00 Ghana Cedis for this academic year.

Sharing his thoughts on the restoration of the trainee nurses allowances on Radio Gold's "Alhaji&Alhaji", Mr. Loh said giving 400 Cedis to trainee nurses as allowances after which they will sit in the house after completion is not in the interest of the country.

He noted government is not concerned with rather wholistically providing solutions to the myriad of issues facing the Nurses Training Colleges.

Editor of the Insight Newspaper Kwesi Pratt said the initial promise made to Ghanaians by the NPP is that they will restore the allowances without a quota system in the trainee colleges but what the NPP is implementing now is very different from what they promised.

He said due to the quota system over 1,600 students have been denied admission which could have rather helped to bridged the gap of a nurse-patient ratio in the country.

"We need about 36,000 more nurses to be able to get the  standard ratio of nurse-patient ratio."

He concluded that with the restoration of nurses trainee allowances and the nurses are no more bonded, Ghana is just producing nurses that will rather subsidize the economy of other foreign countries because they are not mandated to work for the country that gave them 400cedis when they were in school.
