Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has urged the Majority Caucus to exercise tolerance and maturity in their parliamentary conduct, despite holding a two-thirds majority in the House.

He emphasised that the voice of the Minority must always be respected and heard in the interest of national unity and democratic growth.

The Speaker made the call during the swearing-in ceremony of Ewurabena Aubynn, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North. Her inclusion brings the Majority side made up of 184 National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs and 4 Independent Members to a total of 188 seats.

Bagbin reminded the House that the strength of Parliament lies in its diversity and called on all Members to promote decorum in their engagements.

He encouraged MPs to avoid political hostility and work together to build a more respectful and collaborative legislative environment.

For his part, the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, said that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not abuse its two-thirds majority in the House.

He stated that although with a two-thirds majority, they can undertake whatever constitutional reforms are needed, but will do so having in mind the caution from President John Dramani Mahama not to abuse their majority.

“With its, we now have two-thirds Majority,” he said.

The Minority in Parliament staged a walkout when the House was about to swear in the Ablekuma North MP-elect.
