Accra Lions fight back to draw with Elmina Sharks in GPL opener

Debutants Accra Lions held Elmina Sharks to a scoring draw game in the opening match of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season.

The newcomers played a 1-1 draw game with Sharks at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Having started off on a good note from the first half, the home team, Accra Lions excelled and could have led at the break.

Unfortunately, the attackers missed a number of chances, leaving Elmina Sharks to thank their stars.

In the second half, the visitors came in strong and made their experience in the Ghana Premier League count.

Winger Michelle Sarpong who is on loan from Hearts of Oak scored with a brilliant effort in the 65th minute to shoot Elmina Sharks into the lead.

Although the team hoped to hold on to amass the three points, a defiant Accra Lions display saw the team score in the 83rd minute courtesy of a strike from Salifu Rauf to restore parity.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, both sides had some chances but failed to score as the game ended in a 1-1 stalemate at the end of the exciting contest.
