Ghanaian football icon Asamoah Gyan has announced the death of his father, George Gyan Baffour Mensah, in an emotional social media post.

The former Black Stars captain shared the news on Friday, July 24, 2026, paying tribute to his father for his unwavering support throughout his life and career.

“I’m happy you saw my greatness, Dad. Thank you for taking care of us. You will forever be in our hearts. R.I.P. (Asase Yaa),” Gyan wrote, accompanied by broken-heart emojis.

The post has since attracted messages of condolence from football fans, fellow athletes, celebrities and well-wishers, many praising the close bond Gyan shared with his father and offering prayers to the bereaved family.

George Gyan Baffour Mensah is remembered as the father of one of Ghana's most celebrated footballers, whose remarkable career saw him become the country's all-time leading scorer and one of Africa's most accomplished strikers.
