Claudio Ranieri has urged for patience in expecting Daniel Amartey to fill the  hole left by N'Golo Kante but confirmed central midfield is where he sees the 21-year-old's long-term future, according to the Daily Mail.

Amartey has shown promising signs alongside Danny Drinkwater, turning in one of his best Leicester displays in the Champions League victory over Porto and reaching high standards against Swansea and Brugges.

The Ghana international struggled to impose his presence during trips to Anfield and Old Trafford, though, with both matches ending in 4-1 losses and claims that Kante was being missed sorely.

But Ranieri explained those losses were due to a lack of team unity.

'It is about how the midfielders play together,' said Ranieri.

'Remember the other team plays with three or four. We have only two, if the strikers don't help Drinkwater or Amartey or if the wingers don't close narrow.

'That happened against Liverpool, there was the four players against two. That is difficult. You see everybody pass around you. The same could have happened against Porto in the last 15 minutes.

'For that reason I change and I put a their midfielder on to stay together.'

Amartey, signed from Copenhagen for £5million in January, featured at right-back last season but with Kante's departure has been required elsewhere, and is set to start against Southampton.

Ranieri added: 'I think Daniel improves a lot. I am very happy with him. Very good. Because he played so many matches on the flank in his previous team and sometimes in the middle as centre-back or central midfielder.

'Always I believe his best position is as a central midfielder. Slowly, slowly, he is only 21 years old. It is not easy to take this position.'
