Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) has expressed interest in becoming the official banking partner for the newly established Ghana Sports Fund, in a move aimed at strengthening the country’s sports development agenda.

The proposal was discussed at a high-level meeting between GCB officials and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation on January 27, 2026, at the Ministry’s conference room in Accra.

Leading the GCB delegation, Mr. Linus Kumi, Head of Corporate Banking, outlined the bank’s vision of leveraging sports as a catalyst for national unity and development. He reaffirmed GCB’s commitment to investing in local talent, sports infrastructure, and youth development programmes, stressing that effective financial management is key to unlocking the full potential of Ghanaian sports.

“Sports have the power to unify our nation and inspire greatness. Partnering with the Ghana Sports Fund as the official bank will allow us to channel resources efficiently while ensuring accountability and transparency in fund management,” Mr. Kumi said. He added that GCB would provide clear and detailed reporting on how funds are utilised.

The proposal received a positive response from the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, who underscored the need for a dependable financial institution to support athletes, coaches, and sporting projects nationwide.

“This partnership, if finalised, will not only offer financial stability to the Sports Fund but also reflect corporate Ghana’s commitment to nurturing our sporting talents and heroes,” the Minister noted.

Discussions at the meeting also focused on a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which seeks to formalise the partnership. The proposed agreement outlines GCB’s role in managing the Sports Fund’s accounts, providing tailored financial products for athletes and sports organisations, and implementing transparent and efficient disbursement mechanisms.

Hon. Adams described the potential partnership as a significant milestone in Ghana’s pursuit of sporting excellence. “This marks the beginning of a new chapter where finance and passion come together to elevate Ghanaian sports to greater heights,” he said.

Talks between the Ministry and GCB are ongoing, with stakeholders expressing optimism that the collaboration will play a crucial role in empowering athletes and advancing sports development across the country.
